It's the terrible curriculum, that's a big reason that students are behind in math and reading. In elementary math, instead of teaching the students to memorize multiplication facts, instead the curriculum teaches them to break down something like 4×5, and breaks it down into a complicated algebraic equation! Just teach them that 4x5 = 20!! It's not rocket science. Parents should be buying their kids a packet of multiplication cards, and be practicing with their kids at night, plus read to them, and have them read to the parent. But that's not happening. Then there's the language barrier of the Hispanic parents, many of which don't speak English. It all adds up to students not doing well.
