You’re never gonna believe this but Jason Kelce isn’t much of an analytics guy.

The vociferous and gregarious former Philadelphia Eagles center who is now making waves as a member of ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown crew let it be known on a recent episode of his podcast with brother Travis Kelce that he doesn’t think much of people who put statistics ahead of “football.”

The conversation on Wednesday’s episode of New Heights stemmed from Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris’s comments about tight end Kyle Pitts’ lack of catches in a 26-24 win over the New Orleans Saints.

“It was just about going out there and winning the game,” Morris said about Pitts’ zero-catch game . “Really, for me, man, stats are for losers, man. I don’t get involved in that stuff. You go out there and try to win each game, and we were able to win it today.”

Travis broached the topic from a personal space as he’s also been dealing with a drop in production this season despite the Kansas City Chiefs starting 4-0.

“I don’t think [stats] are for losers,” said Travis. “I think when you’re getting good stats you’re helping your team win. And when you do it at a consistent level and you’re scoring touchdowns, and you’re winning football games, they do matter. I hear what he’s saying though. And it’s a part of my philosophy and not being upset that I’m not getting beaucoup stats this year. It’s about winning the football game. And he’s focused on wins and losses.”

Jason differed in his philosophical approach, saying in no uncertain terms that stats are, and always have been, for losers.

“Stats are numbers,” said Jason. “What I care about is the football. Where does it go? Does it go in the end zone? Do we get points? Points are also numbers, but points determine games and wins and losses. Stats are numbers, numbers are nerds, nerds are losers, therefore stats are losers.”

Travis tried to thread the needle between their viewpoints as they were essentially saying the same thing.

“If you care enough about stats for it to change your day, I think that’s when you have a – you don’t have a winning mentality,” said the Chiefs tight end. “So, I get what coach Morris is saying, but at the same time, if you’re putting the ball in the end zone you’re going to get stats, it is what it is.”

Jason reiterated that at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the score.

“All we care about is visually, does that ball go into that territory right there we got points? Does that ball go through those uprights? When we’re on defense, does the ball go that way or does it stay where it’s at? That’s all I care about. I don’t care about the numbers, numbers are for the analytics people, and the pencil pushers, and the zit faces, and the four eyes,” he added cheekily.

Both Kelce brothers eventually found common ground in the fact that Kyle Pitts is a pretty great football player and should probably get some more touches sooner rather than later.

“I will say this, Kyle Pitts is a f***ing unbelievable athlete, great football player. I think trying to get the ball in his hands is a pretty good plan for the Falcons,” Travis said.

“In all seriousness, they should probably get his stats up because he is a pretty good weapon to utilize,” Jason added.
