The Class of 2024 from Logan-Rogersville High School can now add a fun fact to their resume: Guinness World Record holder.

They were the ones who pushed for it, but they didn’t do it alone.

The Guinness World Record Organization recently announced the Logan-Rogersville school district set a record for the World’s Largest Game of Follow the Leader .

The attempt was made April 24 but the record was not confirmed until recently. The record was made public Sept. 20 in a video shown during the football game.

Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Katzin said the district waited five months for a decision. The confirmation process involved the district submitting evidence, which had to reviewed.

“We felt we’d accomplished our goal,” she said.

Logan-Rogersville had 2,348 confirmed participants in its game of Follow the Leader, shattering the previous record of 768 set in 2015.

This is the second Guinness World Record held by the Logan-Rogersville district.

In 2011, Katzin — then principal of the elementary school — successfully led the district campaign to earn a Guinness World Record for the Largest Game of Duck Duck Goose . There were 2,135 participants.

The theme for the year was to be a “record breaker.” Katzin said student interest was high in anything related to the Guinness World Records.

The seniors in the Class of 2024 were in kindergarten at the time of the first record and approached Katzin with the idea of breaking the 2011 record.

“Initially, they wanted to break our record. I encouraged them to keep it and try to break another record,” she said. “That way, we’d have two.”

They agreed. On the big day, middle and high school students walked to the high school football field and track. The elementary students arrived by bus.

In a line, the participants followed a winding path across the field.

Katzin said the undertaking was complicated and required independent judges — adults who were not employees or the parents of current students — so Rogersville stepped up. Many area businesses sent employees.

“It took a lot of community involvement,” she said. “The weather turned out beautiful.”

Photos and videos of the record-breaking attempt were taken and submitted as evidence.

Katzin said the event and the bragging rights are fun but the experience was an educational exercise.

“My biggest goal was for them to recognize that if they set a goal, they can pull together and achieve whatever they put their mind to,” she said.
