Natural disasters are scary all around. Humans are forced to worry about everything, from how they'll meet their basic needs in the wake of tragedy to what in the world comes next. They're scary for our furry friends, too: at best, natural disasters bring about a lot of scary noises. At worst, our pets are separated from us and have no real way of letting us know they need help.

On Wednesday, October 2nd, one Corgi was in this situation. A mudslide in North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Helene swept her away from her family, and they were worried sick about her. Luckily, she was rescued just in time:

Everyone in the comments is so thankful @oliviadee.art was able to help rescue this sweet girl - the way she did was really smart. We can all see how thankful the Corgi is, too!

Unfortunately, there have been no updates on the Corgi, and we're not exactly sure if this is their pup or they just rescued her. No matter what, it was a good deed, and the dog will probably remember it forever. Did you see how she looked at them both when the boat got across the water? She's probably never been so happy in her life.

Since making landfall, Hurricane Helene has killed at least 190 people, over 50 of whom were North Carolinians. North Carolina took a hard hit, and millions are still without power, while dozens of people are still unaccounted for. While it's too early to be accounting for animal loss, previous hurricanes of similar caliber have resulted in thousands of pet deaths. To say that this Corgi is lucky to have survived relatively unscathed is an understatement.

Tips For Helping Your Pet Survive a Hurricane

After a certain point, whether your pet survives a bad hurricane is legitimately dependent on luck, but there are certainly cautionary measures you can take. When there's a hurricane incoming, you need to prepare not only to keep them safe; you also need to make it as easy as possible for them to be returned to you if they do get lost.

There are a few things seasoned hurricane pros suggest:

    1. Make plans to evacuate. If you have a pet, the best thing you can do is get them out of there.
    2. Update their microchip once every two months, even if that just means making sure it has the correct information.
    3. Make sure they're wearing a collar with your information clearly written on it.
    4. Clip a sealed luggage tag to their collar with any information about allergies or medical needs.
    5. Do not put any clothes or shoes on the dog even if you think it'll help them; if they get swept away, they could be drowning hazards.
    6. Print out and laminate flyers with your dog's picture and important information.

If you, for some reason, had to evacuate without your pet or you get separated and they're gone when you return, immediately start going around to shelters - that's the first place rescuers bring pets they find on missions. Leave a picture with them if they're not there - there's still a chance they'll be found. They'll be able to point you in the direction of specific volunteers searching your area for lost pets, and you can speak to them. If you're able, you should also post about it on social media, just in case they got rescued further away.

Hopefully we get an update about this sweet Corgi soon: her family will be so happy when they're finally reunited!
