Drake is one of the NBA's most high-profile fans, arguably the second biggest behind Spike Lee. The rapper is a die-hard fan of the Toronto Raptors and has close relationships with several veteran players, often engaging with them from the sidelines and off the court. This habit once got him and two of the Golden State Warriors stars, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, into a little trouble, leading to a light-hearted fine by coach Steve Kerr for being late on the team plane.

Steve Kerr on fining Drake $500

Despite his friendly demeanor, Kerr always ran a tight ship regarding team rules, especially about punctuality. One of his strictest rules was ensuring that his players were on time for the team plane; moreover giving limited opportunities to each member to invite friends. So, when the Warriors were heading to LA for a game, Kerr demanded everyone to be on time. However, Curry and Green were late.

After some searching, the team discovered that both four-time NBA Champions had been held up at the Oracle Arena, chatting with none other than Drake. Despite their good spirits as they arrived at the plane, Kerr playfully fined all three, including Drake, a mere $500 as a reminder of the importance of punctuality.

"We had a team rule at the time that you could bring a friend on the plane a couple of times a year, and unbeknownst to me, Steph decided to use one of his slots for Drake, " Kerr said. "So, Drake got on the plane that night with Draymond and Steph, and I fined all three of them for being late. And Drake paid his $500 fine. You can ask him that."

Drake confirmed this story in his song

Drake even referenced this incident in his 2017 song Free Smoke, where he raps: " I took the team plane from Oracle ." However, the song did not mention the $500 fine; perhaps Drake did not want to share all the information about the incident.

Furthermore, Steph confirmed the veracity of the story, admitting that he and the former Defensive Player of the Year teammate were indeed in the wrong for boarding the team plane so late.

Curry basically said he and Draymond got caught up chatting with Drake, and when they realized they had to go, it was already late.
