In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene , UNC Asheville has announced that classes will remain suspended until at least Oct. 28. The storm’s devastating impact on the region has led to significant disruptions, prompting the university to extend its closure well beyond the originally planned date of Oct. 9.

Chancellor Kimberly van Noort confirmed the decision on Tuesday, stating that the university will stay in Condition 3 through Oct. 14. This means campus operations are fully suspended, with only essential personnel allowed on-site. After this date, there’s a possibility of easing restrictions, but even if the campus reopens to some degree, classes won’t resume until the end of October.

The campus “sustained minimal structural damage” from the storm, but has been without power, running water or internet since Friday, Sept. 27, van Noort said.
