DDG Responds to Backlash Over Viral 9-to-5 Job Comments

DDG recently stirred up a debate after sharing his opinions about 9-to-5 jobs during an episode of the “No Ordinary” podcast. In a viral clip, the rapper emphasized that traditional employment should be a stepping stone for personal business ventures rather than a long-term career.

“A 9-to-5 should only be used to fund your own [business]. I don’t think nobody should ever get a job and say, ‘I’m gon be the 10-year best employee of the year.’ Nobody should ever think that,” DDG said, expressing his belief that striving to climb the corporate ladder doesn’t offer true security. He warned, “One slip-up will result in termination.” Instead, he advocated for business ownership, stating that it allows people to be in control, hire and fire as they see fit.

While acknowledging that there’s nothing inherently wrong with 9-to-5 jobs, he encouraged listeners to look beyond just working to survive. “You shouldn’t be working a 9-to-5 to take care of your [life] for the rest of your life,” he continued.

After his remarks went viral, DDG took to social media to clarify his stance, jumping into the comments section to add context. “I’m a former TJ Maxx & Kroger employee & I used my checks to invest in myself. It’s just my opinion off experience. Ain’t nun wrong working a 9-5 if that’s what u wanna do. This is motivation for the folks who wanna be a boss,” the “Moonwalking in Calabasas” artist explained.
