(FOUNTAIN, Colo.) — Creek Week is an initiative in Fountain where the community gets together to take care of waterfronts. FOX21 Photojournalist Matthew Putnam joined a group from Ute Pass Elementary School to see how kids are learning to be stewards of the environment.

Jackie Powell, Principal at Ute Pass Elementary School said it is the eighth year of the school participating in Creek Week. Students work to clean up Fountain Creek near the school’s campus. Powell hopes this helps create a relationship with the environment with younger generations.

“So kids are ingrained in technology and that’s a lot of what kids are doing right now. They are connected to video games and cell phones and iPads and TVs, and as humans, we are hardwired to be connected to something bigger. And I think this creates that relationship,” said Powell.
