In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services deployed resources to Jeff Davis County to assist with recovery efforts.

On Sept. 29, CCFES received an urgent request from the Georgia Mutual Aid Group for assistance, prompting immediate action.

CCFES mobilized a team consisting of one water tender, two ambulances, and two chief cars, totaling nine personnel: one division chief, one battalion chief, and seven firefighters, all licensed paramedics or advanced emergency medical technicians.

The team departed for Hazelhurst, Ga., on the evening of Sept. 29. They were scheduled to return the evening of Oct. 3, when other mutual aid agencies will assume coverage.

The primary duties of the deployed personnel include responding to fires, conducting rescues, and providing emergency medical care to those in the area, many of whom were affected by the hurricane.

Fire Chief Eddie Robinson expressed the department’s commitment to supporting fellow Georgians.

“Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services is honored to help our neighbors in Jeff Davis County during this challenging time," he said. "We are deeply saddened by the devastation experienced by their community and many others throughout the southeastern United States. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”
