On Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris is set to hold a rally alongside former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) in Ripon, Wisconsin, the site of an 1854 schoolhouse meeting that kicked off the founding of the Republican Party.

Wisconsin is a crucial battleground state, and part of the so-called "blue wall" of three competitive states that are likely to decide the election, alongside Michigan and Pennsylvania.

The rally is unusual in that Cheney is a conservative Republican who previously chaired the House GOP Conference. In recent years — and particularly following the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol — she has become outspoken against former President Donald Trump and helped investigate Trump's role in the effort to overturn the 2020 election, which contributed to her removal from House GOP leadership and, ultimately, defeat in her congressional primary earlier this year.

Since then, she has crossed the aisle to endorse Harris. Further than that, her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, has also committed to voting for the Democratic ticket this year.

All of this comes as a federal court has published an extensive filing by special counsel Jack Smith, who is prosecuting Trump for his role in the plot to stop certification of the election.
