There are numerous reasons the Washington-Liberty Generals are off to a strong 5-0 start in high-school football this season.

Perhaps at the top of the list is the consistent and highly-accurate passing performance of starting senior quarterback Matthew Abramson.

Through five games, the first-year starter has completed 80 percent of his passes (74 of 92) for 1,048 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has thrown only two interceptions.

Abramson was on target right from the start this season, completing 12 of 16 passes for 237 yards and three TDs in the Generals’ first game. He was 11 of 12 in another contest.

In the team’s recent home blowout victory against its Arlington rival Yorktown Patriots, Abramson was 23 of 30 for 236 yards and two touchdowns.

“He is so prepared for games — just hasn’t made mistakes,” Washington-Liberty head coach Josh Shapiro said.

Shapiro said Generals’ offensive coordinator Bobby Ludwick taught Abramson how to properly watch film of opponents, and the quarterback has diligently and enthusiastically taken to that path of preparation.

“We have very good receivers and a good offensive line, and Bobby has put together a short passing game that works well for Matthew,” Shapiro said. “There are a good combo of things working right now.”

As a junior last season, Abramson was the varsity backup and was starter on the junior-varsity team. Many juniors chose not to play on the junior varsity, preferring the varsity squad instead. Abramson made the decision to take that path because he wanted to play and realized he wasn’t going to beat out the varsity starter.

“I didn’t mind, because I wanted to play and that was my best opportunity to do that,” Abramson said.

He led that 2023 junior-varsity team to a 6-0-1 record.

Abramson also was a junior-varsity quarterback his sophomore season. As a ninth-grader, he was the starting quarterback on the freshman squad.

“We noticed back then, he was small but he understood the game, and we liked his accuracy as a passer,” Shapiro said.
