Bob Uecker: Brewers loss ‘had some sting on it’

Any time you hear a team’s broadcasters excitedly announce a big, game-changing play, there’s always an announcer in another booth announcing the same big, game-changing play with a lot less excitement.

During Game 3 of the Wild Card Series between the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, the less excited announcer was the legendary Bob Uecker, the longtime voice of the Brewers.

The big swing came in the top of the ninth inning, courtesy of New York’s previously slumping slugger, Pete Alonso. With one out and two runners on, Alonso went to the opposite field on a 3-1 pitch from Milwaukee closer Devin Williams for a three-run home run.

“And the pitch, hit in the air to right. Deep, warning track and gone,” Uecker said. “Peter Alonso just put New York on top in this one with a three-run home run to right field. And just like that, a 2-0 lead is now a 3-2 deficit. That quickly. Wow.”

As would be expected, Uecker had far less excitement in his call than Howie Rose , calling the game for the Mets on New York’s WHSQ or even Jon Sciambi , calling the game on ESPN’s national broadcast.

New York added one more run in the top of the ninth inning. Milwaukee Sal Frelick led the bottom of the ninth inning off with a single, bringing the tying run to the plate. But after Joey Ortiz stuck out, Brice Turang hit a sharp one-hopper to Francisco Lindor, who turned the double play to end the game and series.

When the game was over, Uecker, along with Jeff Levering, summed up the loss.

“Well, New York, down. They did it. And The Crew will uh, will have it end, here tonight,” Uecker said.

“Really a crushing end to what was a fabulous season for the Milwaukee Brewers,” Levering added.

“I’m telling you,” Uecker said. “That one — had some sting on it.”
