On Thursday (October 3), Kim Kardashian published a personal essay with NBC News regarding the case of The Menendez Brothers: Erik Menendez and Lyle Menendez .

Kardashian — who described herself as “a businesswoman, media star, and criminal justice reform advocate” at the end of the essay — is calling for the brothers to be released from prison nearly 35 years after they were jailed for the murder of their parents, José Menendez and Kitty Menendez.

Kim Kardashian’s call for the release of The Menendez Brothers arrives amid renewed interest in the chilling 1989 killings of their parents — which has been recently chronicled in Ryan Murphy ’s ‘ Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story .’

In her personal essay published on NBC News, Kim Kardashian explained why she believes The Menendez Brothers’ life sentences should be “reconsidered.” Kardashian — who met the brothers at their San Diego prison on September 21 (alongside ‘ Monsters ’ star Cooper Koch ) — in-part wrote, “I have spent time with Lyle and Erik; they are not monsters. They are kind, intelligent, and honest men.”

The reality star also highlighted The Menendez Brothers’ “exemplary” records in prison and how at least two dozen of their family members have previously called for their release. She said, “When I visited the prison three weeks ago, one of the wardens told me he would feel comfortable having them as neighbors.”

She explained, “Twenty-four family members, including their parents’ siblings, have released statements fully supporting Lyle and Erik and have respectfully requested that the justice system free them. The killings are not excusable. I want to make that clear. Nor is their behavior before, during or after the crime. But we should not deny who they are today in their 50s. The trial and punishment these brothers received were more befitting a serial killer than two individuals who endured years of sexual abuse by the very people they loved and trusted.”

Kim Kardashian continued, “I don’t believe that spending their entire natural lives incarcerated was the right punishment for this complex case. Had this crime been committed and trialed today, I believe the outcome would have been dramatically different.”

She added, “I also strongly believe that they were denied a fair second trial and that the exclusion of crucial abuse evidence denied Erik and Lyle the opportunity to fully present their case, further undermining the fairness of their conviction.”
