Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla is cut from a different cloth. Crazy Joe uses a unique approach when motivating his team or driving home his point. Whether it's The Dark Knight, UFC fights, or soccer, Mazzulla references different things not related to basketball to communicate his thoughts to his players.

During the recent episode of the 'Hot Ones' podcast, 2024 Eastern Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown talked about his head coach's unorthodox style and how he used it to formulate the Celtics' offense.

"He just has a bunch of like quotes and mentality," said JB. "One of the things he's coined is like, we call our offense the 'killer whale offense,' and we attack seals, cuz killer whales like how they hunt seals," revealed Brown. " And we study like how killer whales attack as a unit, and then we built our offense kind of like off of like killer whales."

Killer Whale's offense was the league-best

Orcas are known for their intelligence and impressive hunting techniques. Whether it's taking down a larger whale or even sinking boats, these apex predators use a coordinated attack to accomplish the mission. With the Celtics having several 'killers,' maybe that's why Mazzulla got them to attack like orcas.

"Joe definitely has a bunch of crazy stuff," added Brown. "But there's a method to his madness, and it obviously works."

With their 'killer whale' approach, the Celtics had the No.1 rated offense in the NBA last season at 123.2 points per 100 possessions . They also ranked second in scoring at 120.6 points per game, first in three-point attempts and makes, and second in three-point shooting percentage. The C's went on to finish with the best regular season record in the league at 64-18 on their way to winning the 2024 NBA championship.

Mazzulla didn't mind JT being benched

'Joe's madness' continued after they won the franchise's 18th overall championship. When Jayson Tatum went through tough times during the 2024 Olympics, Mazzulla flew to Paris to check on his star player. But instead of sympathizing with Duke product's anguish, Sicko Joe was happy to see JT get benched .

"Joe was probably the happiest person in the world that I didn't win Finals MVP and that I didn't play two of the games in the Olympics. Tatum said . "So that was odd. But if you know Joe, it makes sense."

Odd is perhaps the kindest adjective that Mazzulla has gotten from his players. Jaylen called him crazy, while Derrick White labeled Joe a sicko. Well, they can call him whatever they want, but as they would tell anyone, winning is all that matters, and that's what Joey Maz has brought to Boston.
