It was a special night for the Atlanta Falcons as they took on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on "Thursday Night Football." Not only did they secure a thrilling 36-30 overtime win, but the Falcons inducted former quarterback Matt Ryan into their Ring of Honor.

However, Atlanta's newest quarterback, Kirk Cousins, stole the show.

The former Michigan State star finished the game with 42 completions for 509 yards and four touchdowns. He also led the Falcons to their game-tying drive to end regulation and their game-winning drive in overtime.

With his 509 yards, Cousins broke the Atlanta record for most passing yards in a single game, passing Ryan's 503 yards from a 2016 game.

It's one thing to break the passing yards record, but to do it during the previous record holder's Ring of Honor induction is an ironic twist. And NFL fans immediately took note of this, leaving their thoughts on Cousins' big game on Ryan's big night.

"Kirk Cousins breaking Matt Ryan's single-game passing record on 'Matt Ryan Night' is nasty work," one fan said.

"Matt Ryan watching a dude break his single game record on the day he gets inducted into the ring of honor is kind of hilarious irony."

"Kirko threw a franchise record with Matt Ryan in attendance. Lmao, ok"

"Broke this man Matt Ryan record on his hall of fame night, that’s nasty work"

"Kirk didn’t have to break the falcon record on Matt Ryan night"

"509. On matt Ryan's night. Great job Kirk Cousins."

After playing with the Boston College Eagles, Ryan was drafted with the No. 3 pick in the 2008 NFL draft by the Falcons. He played 14 seasons with the Falcons, winning an MVP award in 2016 and taking them to the Super Bowl, where they became infamous after blowing a 28-3 lead against the New England Patriots. Ryan also owns basically every Atlanta passing record one could think of, excluding the one Cousins just broke, of course.

Cousins and the Falcons now sit at 3-2 on the season, good for first place in the NFC South. They will have another divisional showdown in Week 6 as they travel to Charlotte, NC, to take on the Carolina Panthers.
