SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A new chapter unfolds for the beloved Leeper Bridge as construction begins this Wednesday, marking a significant step in enhancing safety and accessibility for the East Bank Trail. This historic structure, once an old railway line, has been a vital connector for walkers and cyclists, and the forthcoming repairs aim to ensure its continued use for generations to come.

The project will see the replacement of the aging rail ties with a modern concrete deck, a necessary upgrade after years of wear and tear. Leeper Avenue beneath the bridge will be closed between North Shore Drive and Napoleon Street during this phase of construction. South Bend Deputy Director of Public Works, Jitin Kain, acknowledged the bridge's popularity, stating, "It's certainly a popular trail. It's used quite a bit, and we're trying to complete the project with as little disruption as possible. However, the work will take about four to six weeks, so the bridge will be closed until mid-November."

This initiative is not the first attempt to secure the bridge's integrity. Following a significant incident in 2021 when a truck collided with its support beams, the bridge was closed for an entire year. During that time, extensive repairs were made, including the installation of new beams and concrete supports. However, recent evaluations have raised safety concerns once again, prompting the need for these critical updates.

Kain highlighted the challenges faced during the initial phases of the project, noting, “I believe there were some funding concerns that delayed the project initially, but we have the funds in place now, and the project has been awarded. These repairs were identified earlier this year.”

As the construction progresses, detour signs will guide bikers and pedestrians along alternate routes, ensuring that the community remains connected even amid the work. The revitalization of Leeper Bridge is not just about repairs; it's a commitment to preserving a cherished community asset that fosters connection and encourages outdoor activity in South Bend.

This construction project stands as a testament to the city’s dedication to enhancing public spaces and prioritizing the safety of its residents while maintaining access to the natural beauty of the East Bank Trail.
