A five-match losing streak came to a halt for the Fike High volleyball team Thursday night, Oct. 3, as a three-set sweep of visiting East Wake breathed new life into the Golden Demons’ NCHSAA 3-A playoff hopes.
Fike, which is ranked No. 35 in the 3-A East by MaxPreps.com , ended its nearly three-week slide with a 25-15, 26-24, 25-17 triumph over the Warriors. The Demons upped their record to 7-11 overall and 5-7 in 3-A Quad County Conference matches while East Wake exited 4-13 overall and 1-10 in league outings.
Fike has games at Southern Wayne on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and home Thursday for Senior Day against Hunt.
Junior setter Maleah Davis posted a double-double of 27 assists and 14 digs to go with two aces to spark Fike. Senior Mollie Blake hammered nine kills while classmate Lily Lyndon had seven kills. April Leon totaled eight digs and six kills.
Summer Bass produced eight digs, three kills and three aces while older sister KaDee Bass delivered eight digs and five kills. Alyssa Tate added 13 digs as Fike swept all six sets played against the Warriors in 2024.
GIRLS TENNIS
Demons complete perfect QCC run
FOUR OAKS — If the 3-A Quad County Conference doesn’t survive NCHSAA realignment for the next four years, Fike will forever be perfect in its girls tennis annals after the Golden Demons finished a fourth straight 14-0 league season — 56 straight victories — with a 7-2 defeat of South Johnston on Thursday.
Fike, which will take an 18-0 mark into the NCHSAA 3-A dual-team playoffs, had a run of six straight unbeaten seasons from the 3-A Big Eight to the 3-A NEW 6 conferences from 2001-2006.
Junior Emory Skinner finished with a 17-0 mark in singles as she was joined by classmate Holland Ellis and seniors Kaden Biamby and Zoe Mitchell with singles wins.
“This was only the third time we have played three matches in a week this season,” Fike head coach Lee Matthews said. “We may have had some tired legs in a few spots today, but I am so proud of this group of girls this season.
“Today was a solid win over an experienced South Johnston team that is headed to the playoffs with a third place finish in the conference.”
