FINALLY. Today, Jamey Johnson announced his first solo studio album in 14 years, Midnight Gasoline . It's due out everywhere on November 8th, and marks his sixth album overall. Of course, this comes on the heels of the announcement yesterday that Jamey had signed with Warner Music Nashville , through his independent Big Gassed Records label. Midnight Gasoline is also the first of Johnson's Cash Cabin Series , which is a collection of albums recorded at the famed studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee, that was owned by Johnny and June Carter Cash. Johnson says it was a dream to make an album there:
"I’ve always wanted to make an album there. I went in with an album in mind, where we go in and cut and cut and cut. That is when I knew we were off to the races. This is more than an album; this is a series. The main thing is there is a presence there. There is a spirit in the place. Maybe it was born there from Johnny and June, and maybe it was born there from the countless other artists who have come to that studio to record. But there is a spirit there and I love it. It feels like home to me." He explained that there isn't some big, overarching message with the songs, but "I think the only common thread would be me. There isn’t an overtone or some underlying theme in the songs. They are just glimpses of my life. Some of them are just funny stories, and not all of them were written recently.
In that regard, I really am kind of picking up where I left off, grabbing those few songs that were probably ready to put out back then. It’s good to get those out there." Of course, Johnson is an accomplished songwriter and incredible artist, who has written for artists like George Strait, Willie Nelson, Trace Adkins, Joe Nichols and more, and is probably best known in the mainstream for his Top 10 2009 hit “In Color.” Earlier in his career, Johnson was signed to MCA Nashville, but he hasn’t put out a solo studio album for almost a decade and a half. Needless to say, his longtime fans have been waiting patiently for a long time now, and this will easily be one the most highly-anticipated country albums of the year. He brought in some great producers to help with he project too, as the first half of the album was produced by The Kent Hardly Playboys. The great Dave Cobb produced the album’s second half. Additionally, he had some top-notch writers helping him out, including Jim “Moose” Brown, Dallas Davidson, Randy Houser, Ernest and even Chris Stapleton on a song called "Saturday Night in New Orleans" that I can't wait to hear. Today, Jamey released the reflective song "Someday When I’m Old," and has already put out "Trudy” with Randy Houser, “What A View,” “21 Guns,” and “Sober.” All of this new music can't come soon enough, and it's so exciting to think that we will have brand new Jamey Johnson tunes in a little over a month. I know they will be worth the (very long) wait, and it's safe to say that he is officially back.
