SELMA — The Town Council in September said yes to River Oak Townhomes, though that’s unlikely to remain the development’s name.

Turns out River Oak Apartments are nearby and the owners there are wary of two similarly named housing projects so close together.

“We feel this is a problem,” the apartment complex’s owner said in a letter to the town. “There cannot be two separate properties that close with names this similar. This would create problems particularly for 911 addresses, especially in an emergency.”

Mike Stewart, an engineer speaking for the developer, said a name change would not be a problem. “We’ll be glad to make an appropriate name that’s unique to the area,” he said. “We do not have a problem with the neighbor’s request.”

The council had no problems with the townhomes.

“It is our desire to see a little more density going … into our industrial areas,” Mayor Byron McAllister said. The townhomes would be on West Oak Street, not far from the fuel terminals.

The developer’s plans call for 100 townhouses on 16.6 acres.
