    Borah stands tall against Kuna

KUNA — The stage was set for a clash between two conference foes as the Kuna Kavemen sought revenge for last season’s road loss to Borah. The Lions had other plans Thursday night as they came into enemy territory to spoil Kuna’s senior night with a 35-7 victory.

Right from the start, neither offense could find rhythm as defenses came out playing hard-nose football. Control of the line of scrimmage and win-in-the trenches mentality consumed the first quarter as the contest remained scoreless.

It wasn’t until the Lions found their offensive spark plug in senior two-way star Keijien Shearer, who broke the tie with a goal-line surge giving Borah a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. Shearer continued to find himself in the end zone throughout the night as he put up a four-touchdown performance, three rushing and one receiving.

“I love helping the team any way I can, and these were the first touchdowns of my career,” said Shearer regarding his versatility to play as a running back on offense and linebacker on defense.

Down 14-0 coming out of halftime, the Kavemen were able to slow down the Lions’ attack and generate points as sophomore quarterback Leno Senio connected with junior wide receiver Jaxon Bullen for a touchdown early in the third quarter making it a one-possession game at 14-7.

Borah put a halt to the opposition’s offense following the score as they forced many three and outs the rest of way, giving senior quarterback Dylan Luekenga the opportunity to control the rest of the game.

“We’re always on the hunt, we never settle,” said Luekenga regarding the success that Borah has found season after taking down his former school, Kuna.

The Kavemen only possessed the ball a total of seven minutes in the second half due to a stifling defensive presence and a brilliant clock management approach from Borah. The Lions rounded off a quality win and continue to roar toward the postseason.

“The quarterback settled in after being hyped up, along with having that huge stop after the blocked punt. Then we went down and scored to find a way to seize the momentum,” said Borah’s head coach, JQ Kenyon, on his team’s efforts to round out the win. “These guys have been through a lot of hardships in their lives, and they come together over football, and I’m super proud to be their coach.”

Borah (5-1, 3-0 6A SIC River Division) is off to its best start under Kenyon. The Lions sit atop the River Division standings, a half game ahead of Eagle. The Lions will have an extra day of rest to prepare for their matchup against rival Mountain View next week as they look to extend their five-game winning streak with another road trip next week.

Kuna (3-3, 2-1) struggled to get their running attack going as their three-game winning streak was snapped at home on senior night. The Kavemen’s playoff hopes remain alive as they have the opportunity to bounce back on the road next with a big game against Eagle.
