Urban Meyer Advocates For Potential 3-Loss College Football Powerhouse to Make CFP

Urban Meyer, the three-time national championship-winning coach turned college football analyst, recently made a strong case for a potential three-loss team to make the new 12-team College Football Playoff.

In a recent episode of Meyer, Mark Ingram and Rob Stone's podcast, " The Triple Option ," the three discussed the importance of strength of schedule for each team's postseason resume.

Recent conference realignment has influenced a number of teams' schedules for 2024 and beyond.

Some SEC teams will have to play up to four to five top-10 opponents, while other conferences, such as the ACC, won't play any.

"There's some teams that won't play a ranked team or a top ten team," Meyer said.

The Georgia Bulldogs were discussed after their recent loss to the now-No. 1 team in the nation, the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The question being asked is, is it fair to leave them out of the College Football Playoff if they finish 9-3 with two more losses to either No. 2 Texas, No. 12 Ole Miss or No. 4 Tennessee?

"Not for me," Meyer added. "I’m going to swing hard. Man, I think schedule counts."

Ingram also made his case for Georgia.

"They'll (teams who won't face a top 10 opponent) be 11-1 and Georgia will be 9-3," Ingram said. "That 9-3 outweighs the 11-1. I'm not worried about Georgia. I’m just saying I think their team is going to be a problem moving forward from what they've just experienced in Tuscaloosa."

Georgia has been one of the most dominant teams in America in recent years. Up until its Week 5 loss to Alabama, the Bulldogs rode a 42-game regular season win streak. They've also won two national titles in the last three seasons.

Fans expect to see Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs bounce back this weekend against the Auburn Tigers (2-3), as Georgia enters as 22-point favorites, per ESPN BET odds.

Kickoff on Saturday is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
