A new survey shows most New York City residents want Mayor Eric Adams , D, to resign following his federal corruption charges. That's according to a newly released Marist Poll of New York City , with 69% of residents feeling he should step aside.

This is the first poll released on Adams since he indicted. Adams is facing five federal counts of bribery, corruption, wire fraud and soliciting and accepting donations from foreign nationals.

If Adams does not resign, 63% of people surveyed think Gov. Kathy Hochul , D-N.Y., should force him to step down. A further 65% of New York City residents think Adams did something illegal. Meanwhile, 24% think he did something unethical, but not illegal, and only 8% think he did nothing wrong.

Adams’ job approval rating amid the controversy has declined sharply, with 74% saying they disapprove. That’s down from his approval rating of 37% in 2023.

Adams told reporters Friday, Oct. 4 after attending an African American Clergy & Elected Officials meeting, “It’s a natural reaction for people to feel that way without getting the full depth of what’s taken place here.”

Adams has insisted he has done nothing wrong.

The Marist Poll was conducted among 1,073 New York City adult residents. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

I don't want Jumane Williams to step into his place as Mayor. No way.
