Recipe: Ohio-Inspired French Onion Soup Rice

    Ingredients:

    • 1 cup long-grain white rice
    • 4 cups beef broth
    • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (optional, for serving)
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
    • Fresh thyme leaves for garnish (optional)

    Directions:

    1. In a large skillet, melt the butter with olive oil over medium heat.
    2. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with sugar, salt, pepper, and dried thyme. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown—this will take about 30 to 40 minutes.
    3. Stir in the rice, making sure it’s coated with the caramelized onions for extra flavor.
    4. Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a boil.
    5. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the rice simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is fully absorbed.
    6. Fluff the rice with a fork, taste, and adjust the seasoning if needed.
    7. For an extra indulgence, serve the rice hot with a sprinkle of shredded Gruyère cheese and garnish with fresh thyme leaves.

I Love this dish because it’s So versatile. You can Add 1-2 cans of Campbells Golden Mushroom soup or you can use fresh sliced mushrooms and only 1 can beef broth and couple of shakes of Worcestershire sauce. Or you cld use it with leftover brisket or roast or ground beef The skies the limit.
