She shares this normal personality with 3 other bear cubs: June, Maple, and Olive. Normal villagers have sweet, friendly dispositions and are not wont to disrupt the status quo. She also has the nature hobby, meaning she will examine fossils and insects while reading books on them. Pekoe has short black hair, featuring a straight fringe for bangs. Her initial catchphrase is “bud,” which we will soon see is appropriate for her character. She has the Taurus sign, as her birthday is on May 18.

Her name derives from a term used in tea leaf grading. The highest grading for Western and South Asian tea leaves is “orange pekoe.” Grades are determined by the number of nascent tea leaves picked alongside their leaf buds. Tea culture is quite important to the history of China, which is fitting as the cute cub bears a distinctly Chinese appearance. Her ears are covered by white buns, resembling a classic Chinese hairstyle called niujiaotou (also known as "ox horns"), seen in other gaming characters like Street Fighter’s Chun-Li. Pekoe’s initial outfit is the sleeveless silk dress, based on a qipao/cheongsam.

How to Get Pekoe

Finding the cute little cub may be an unbearable task. Occasionally, a villager will visit your island’s campsite, allowing you to play games with them and ask them to join your community. However, the selection of who will camp is random, and the odds of finding Pekoe specifically are low. You can also invite her to the campsite using her Amiibo card. You can scan the card using the Nookstop terminal in Resident Services and directly invite her to the campsite. Unlike the aforementioned randomized method, this will require several days of effort as campers invited via Amiibos will not immediately request to move onto your island.

Another way to forage for Pekoe is by finding her on a Mystery Island Tour. These tours can be initiated at the airport by using Nook Miles Tickets. Keep in mind that, like the campsite, the odds of finding her will be low given the size of the roster of villagers. You may burn through hundreds of tickets before uncovering Pekoe. Perhaps the easiest way to acquire her is through another player, thanks to New Horizons’ online capabilities. Villagers will occasionally express their desire to move out of their current home and head elsewhere. When they are packed in boxes, another player can visit them and request the moving villager migrate to their island.

Pekoe is a sweet and caring cub who will breathe life into your island experience. However, it should be noted that she is also a popular character and is often ranked in the top 100 villagers in polls. Trading for her may be difficult due to her looks and personality. You will likely require great patience or resources before officially welcoming her to your community. But the effort may be worthwhile, as the Chinese-inspired bear will bring depth, culture, and a touch of cuteness to your game. If you should finally meet her, you may end up with a new favorite bud.
