Arne Slot has revealed that Vitezslav Jaros asked to leave Liverpool during the summer transfer window. Jaros made his debut for the Reds against Crystal Palace on Saturday , coming off the bench after first-choice goalkeeper Alisson went down with an injury.

Regular back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was absent from the squad due to illness, which meant third-choice 'keeper Jaros was required to see the game out at Selhurst Park.

Jaros was not required to make any exceptional saves but he was a calm presence and helped to preserve the Reds' lead as they consolidated their position at the top of the Premier League table with a 1-0 win.

Jaros, 23, joined Liverpool in 2017 but had never previously played for the senior team, being loaned out on several occasions. "It was very good to see," Slot said after handing Jaros his debut. "With Caoimhin being sick, our third goalkeeper got his chance. It is always nice for a team when everybody is involved.

"He had a very good season, winning the league and cup where he was in Austria [on loan at Sturm Graz]. He wanted to go because he wanted to play but we stopped him because we needed a good third goalkeeper and we were right."

Kelleher looks set for a run in the team after the international break after Slot said that he expects Alisson to be out of action for several weeks.

“We don’t know definitely what happened but if you walk off like he does that normally means he’s not in the Brazil squad and I don’t expect him to be in the team in the first game we play afterwards (at home to Chelsea on October 20)," said Slot. “It’s going to take a few weeks, I assume. I think it is his hamstring.

“Alisson is our clear number one and is the best goalkeeper in the world. It’s always a blow when he gets injured, not only for himself but also for us as a team. The positive thing for the team, not only in the goalkeeper position but also in almost every position, is that we also have a second option that’s really good.

“Caoimhin has already shown this season that he’s quite clearly the number two goalkeeper. He did really well. He was sick yesterday, but it’s very pleasing to see even our third goalkeeper can have an impact on results.”
