We love a good trench coat—the length and the classic style are timeless. And while these kinds of coats are most often in a khaki color or are made for rainy weather, denim trench coats are very much a thing and very much on-trend. They’re a fun way to spruce up your wardrobe and wear an iconic coat style with a twist. Target’s newest denim trench is not only affordable and well-liked by customers, but it also looks like styles at Madewell and Reformation that are up to seven times the price.
Target’s Women's Denim Trench Coat in Dark Wash by their in-house brand, Universal Thread, is currently $50. It has a classic double-breasted trench coat design with buttons on the front to fasten it closed. It falls below the knee and is a “casual fit” meaning that it’s not oversized or relaxed but it’s not fitted, either. It has a notched collar and a waist tie belt. It also has slashed pockets and water-resistant construction which is a nice plus (though it’s water-resistant, not waterproof, so keep that in mind).
Being that it’s a denim trench coat, you could have guessed that the majority of the fabric would be made of cotton. To be specific, it’s made with 40% cotton, 40% recycled cotton and 20% lyocell. And as we said before, people seem to really like this coat.
"Love this coat! It's a Staple Piece” one customer wrote in their review. “I like that it's not too thick. The quality is amazing and it's nice on short people. I'm 5'1 and it still feels just right. I'm a happy shopper."
Another person simply wrote that it was a “cute denim trench” and one shopper wrote that it was “on trend yet classic."
"This has great, high-end, trench coat features that are made current with the fabric which is having a big year,” they wrote. “However, denim has been around for 100 + years so this won't look out of date any time soon. This could easily cost much much more at a more upscale store. I hope Target continues having such wonderful affordable styles…”
This Target trench is similar to Madewell’s Denim Double-Breasted Crop Trench Coat in Ravenwood Wash , which is $198. The blue of their jean wash colors are nearly identical and they’re both double-breasted (though Target’s has metal-looking buttons and Madewell’s buttons look marbled). Madewell’s denim trench coat is also made with 100% cotton, with 5% of it being recycled cotton. This one also has a waist tie with belt loops, a relaxed fit and a notched collar.
Reformation also has a similar coat as well with their Hayes Denim Trench Coat , which is $368. This has a similar color and style (again, classic trench coat). It’s also double-breasted with black buttons and has a waist tie. The collar is similar and it has some nice side pockets. This one is made with 80% “organically grown cotton” and 20% recycled cotton.
While you can’t deny the good quality that comes from Reformation and Madewell’s brands, Target’s Women's Denim Trench Coat is basically the same coat for a fraction of the price. So it’s worth taking a look at if a denim trench is calling your name this fall season.
