LeBron James 'calls cap' on controversial Kobe Bryant claim after missing preseason opener

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James had time for a mini-flurry of tweets on Saturday morning.

The four-time NBA MVP quote-tweeted Tyrese Haliburton to check in on the WNBA and responded to Boston Celtics icon-turned-sportscaster Brian Scalabrine's anecdote regarding his former Lakers teammate Russell Westbrook. The 39-year-old also had some pointed words for the popular NBA account Legion Hoops, which linked to a story claiming James joined the Purple and Gold partially due to their treatment of Kobe Bryant in his final years with the team.

The site, LakersDaily.com, acquired quotes for the story from ESPN's Ramona Shelburne's extended expose titled "Inside Lakers training camp: LeBron with Bronny, Redick and painful lessons from Kobe" published Friday. "I came to the Lakers cause I wanted to help [team owner] Jeanie [Buss] win championships, bring that Spark back to the Lakers and see my family blossom in SoCal," James tweeted on Saturday morning.

"Why would I make a decision on how someone else is treated. Mama always said 'Stay out of grown folks business.'"

Shelbourne has covered the Lakers on ESPN for over a decade. She previously served as a reporter for the Los Angeles Daily News from 2002-2009.

James joined the Lakers in 2018 after spending the entirety of his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat. His son and now teammate Bronny James attended the Sierra Canyon school in Los Angeles.

The forward has padded his Hall of Fame-worthy resume with the Lakers. James has already added his fourth NBA title in 2020 and five All-NBA nods (one first, one second, and three third) as he enters his fifth season in Los Angeles.

Despite turning 40 midseason, James played 71 games in 2023-24 and averaged 25.7 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 54 percent from the floor. The Lakers rewarded him with a two-year, $101.4 million extension featuring a player option.

The Lakers were similarly accommodating towards Bryant in his last few years with the team, albeit with substantially worse production. In his farewell 2015-16 campaign, a then 37-year-old Bryant averaged 17.6 points per game while shooting just 35.8% from the field. He received a memorable sendoff in his last game with the team and scored 60 points.

After tearing his ACL in 2013, the former Lakers superstar netted salaries of $30 million, $23.5 million, and $25 million. His former agent, Rob Pelinka, is the current Vice President of Basketball Operations and the General Manager of the Lakers

The Lakers kicked off their preseason with a 124-107 defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Though the elder James didn't see the floor, Bronny James debuted and made a few flashy days but finished with two points in 16 minutes while shooting 1-6.

LeBron James is apparently delighted to be sharing a locker room with his youngest son: "It means the world to [James]," Anthony Davis said . "I mean, no one has ever got a chance to play with their son. So that's like a different level of joy and appreciation. Nobody's ever done that."
