Washington entered a new era this season with Jedd Fisch, who came over from Arizona. The head coach took over for Kalen DeBoer, who departed for Alabama.

Coming in from the Pac-12, Fisch noticed Washington, as well as team’s like Iowa, are constantly in an arms race to the top.

“First of all, it was important for Amber and I to commit to continuing to create incredible facilities here at the University of Washington,” Jedd Fisch said earlier this month. “The Big Ten is an arms race in itself in both NIL and facilities and operating budgets and travel budgets and making sure that you’re top of the line in all areas.

“We are going against the best of the best, and in this ever-changing environment of college football, I think it’s so critical to make an investment from the inside out, from the top down, however you want to look at it, so that our community realizes the commitment that we’re making is one that we ask others to make as well and one in which we know we need to make if we’re going to compete at the highest level.”

Washington is new to the Big Ten, but Iowa certainly isn’t. Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz made headlines recently when he made the case for five years of eligibility and no redshirt for athletes.

“That’s a new wrinkle,” Ferentz said . “What’s happened there is a new wrinkle to some degree. So, I mean, nothing surprises me for a long time, but especially nowadays. But yeah, I still feel the same way. I think it would make sense just to give players the option to have five years.

“The trend right now is to be at a place less than longer as it was, you know, maybe 10 years ago. So, yeah, I’d favor that. Certainly would favor that. And then, you know what you’re referencing, what happened last week at a couple places. It’s just a reflection of the times. It is what it is, unfortunately.”
