Week 6, though, may have taken the cake as far as upsets and last-play game-winners were concerned. From a near stunner in Portland to an bonafide shocker in the UAC, the first weekend of October had it all in the subdivision. Rhode Island Survives OT Scare at HamptonFor much of the afternoon on Saturday it seemed as though #20 Rhode Island (4-1, 2-0 CAA) was going to lose its second game of the season in upset fashion to Hampton (3-3, 0-2 CAA). A wild rally spearheaded by Devin Farrell, though, saved the Rams from such a fate. Ferrell led a 10-play, 81-yard drive in the closing minutes to score the tying touchdown with just 24 seconds left then, after trading two scores in overtime, Ferrell himself ran it on a two-point try to ice a 46-44 win.It was not for lack of trying on the Pirates part as quarterback Malcolm Mays threw for 253 yards and four touchdowns. Receiver Brennan Ridley caught eight passes for 121 yards and two of those scores against the Rhody defense which surrendered 438 total yards and was on the field for well over half of the game. The Rams withstood three turnovers and eight failed third down conversion tries thanks in large part to running back Malik Grant’s huge game. Grant rumbled for 180 yards on 20 carries and found the end zone once. Fellow back Deon Silas ran for two scores while Farrell accounted for 277 total yards of offense throwing and running. The Wildcats survived several surges from the Grizzlies to force overtime where they held strong to remain unbeaten in Big Sky play. WSU quarterback Richie Munoz was sensational, throwing six touchdowns and no interceptions. After UM took an early 7-0 lead on a 37-yard scoring run by Eli Gillman, Munoz began his big day by leading the Wildcats on a quick 75-yard drive that ended in his first touchdown. From there Weber State strung off three more TDs that were only answered by a Griz field goal. Montana QB Logan Fife finally ended the drought with a two-yard TD run before halftime. In the second half, the Grizzlies clawed their way back to, eventually, regain the lead in the fourth quarter off another Gillman touchdown run. Munoz responded right back with a 71-yard pass to Jacob Sharp. When Montana scored again to go up three, Weber State kicker Kyle Thompson sent the game into overtime as time expired. In the extra frame running back Damon Bankston scored on a seven-yard run and the defense held to secure the 55-48 victory. #16 Abilene Christian Upsets #5 Central ArkansasDespite coming in ranked inside the Top 20 and being at home, hardly anyone gave #16 Abilene Christian (4-2, 3-0 UAC) a chance against visiting Central Arkansas (4-2, 1-1 UAC) on Saturday. The underdog Wildcats, though, proved their mettle as they outlasted the Bears 41-35 in a shootout to remain undefeated in United Athletic Conference play. Quarterback Maverick McIvor was tremendous once again for ACU, throwing five touchdowns and no interceptions. He completed 22 passes for 350 yards and 202 of them went to receiver Nehemiah Martinez who hauled in three TDs on the night. The Wildcats defense took the ball away twice and, despite allowing 155 rushing yards to star UCA running back ShunDerrick Powell, limited the damage enough to hang on for the win. Central Arkansas and Abilene Christian both rolled the dice early and often with each team attempting multiple fourth down conversions and succeeding on two. Down seven in the late stages, though, it was Bears QB Will McElvain that made the costly mistake, throwing his lone interception to Will Shaffer with just 58 seconds remaining. Unranked Towson Takes Down CAA Rival #12 W&amp;MWilliam &amp; Mary (4-2, 1-1 CAA) had a day it would just as soon forget against Towson (2-3, 1-1 CAA). The Tribe fell into a 10-point hole early and never really recovered as the Tigers rolled on to their first league win of the year 34-27. W&amp;M’s first touchdown didn’t come until right before halftime and, despite a fourth-quarter push, they didn’t have enough to complete the rally. Towson’s signature play came off a 78-yard scoop-and-score fumble recovery from linebacker Branson Peters in the third quarter. Peters’ fumble recovery was one of two by the Tigers defense and one of three total turnovers the William &amp; Mary offense committed. Quarterback Sean Brown completed 17 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns while Tyrell Green Jr. ran for 133 yards. Tribe signal caller Darius Wilson and running back Malachi Imoh each coughed the ball up in the loss. Both Imoh and fellow back Bronson Yoder were held to under 100 rushing yards (only the second time that has happened to Yoder this fall). It was William &amp; Mary’s first defeat at the hands of an FCS opponent this season. #9 UC Davis Avoids Upset at Portland State on Final Play UC Davis (5-1, 2-0 Big Sky), fresh off an upset win over Idaho last week, needed every last second to save their unblemished conference record against Portland State (0-5, 0-2 Big Sky) on Saturday evening in the Rose City. Trailing by six, Aggies quarterback Miles Hastings rolled to his right on the game’s final play and shot a dart to Trent Tompkins at the goal line. Lan Larison rushed for 124 yards and a score on 23 touches while Hastings threw for nearly 400 yards. In total the UC Davis offense picked up 31 first downs compared to PSU’s 18. The Vikings, despite winning the turnover and time of possession battles, are still winless on the season. Portland State quarterback Dante Chachere threw for three touchdowns and no picks and the Vik’s defense forced a pair of turnovers in the gutsy performance. Tarleton State Squeaks by Southern Utah in OTIn a weekend that was full of Top 25 upsets, the night almost ended with another as #14 Tarleton State (5-1, 2-0 UAC) struggled wire-to-wire with Southern Utah (2-4, 1-1 UAC) in Cedar City in the late game. The Texans had a golden opportunity to win the game in regulation after SUU quarterback Bronson Barron tossed an untimely interception at his own 25-yard line. TSU kicker Adrian Guzman, however, missed his 24-yard field goal try four plays later, sending the game to OT. Once in overtime, Tarleton State got the ball first and handled business with a touchdown run from Kayvon Britten. Southern Utah attempted to answer with a scoring pass from Barron to Joshua Acord but the Thunderbirds failed on the extra point, handing the Texans a narrow 38-37 victory. Britten totaled 192 yards on the ground and three touchdowns on a whopping 37 carries. TSU quarterback Victor Gabalis completed 18 passes for 285 yards and another TD while the TSU defense picked off two passes.
