The National Weather Service has made changes to its cold weather alerts

Don’t expect to see a wind chill watch or warning on the forecast this winter. Instead, keep an eye out for "extreme cold" watches and warnings as temperatures drop.

The National Weather Service recently announced changes to its cold weather messaging, which will replace "windchill" watches, warnings and advisories with "extreme cold" watches, warnings and advisories.

Hard freeze watches and warnings have also been changed to freeze watches and warnings.

The NWS says that the messaging is meant to clarify that cold can be dangerous with or without wind chills.

Per the Star Tribune , the previous system meant that dangerous temperatures of between -25 or -30 would not trigger an alert because it wasn't accompanied with wind.

The alerts will still be issued when dangerously cold air is possible (watch) or expected (warning).
