TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – Smith County fire officials responded to a structure fire in the 100 block of Montgomery Gardens on Monday afternoon after a controlled burn was allegedly left unattended.

LIST: Burn bans in East Texas

According to officials, a deputy fire marshal was driving by 175 Montgomery Gardens on Monday at approximately 2 p.m. when they noticed a fire and called it in.

The fire reportedly started as a controlled burn behind 175 Montgomery Gardens but was allegedly left unattended and spread to a storage shed and mobile home on 271 Montgomery Gardens.

Officials are warning that even though several counties are not under burn bans, the conditions may make it dangerous to burn.

“Wait until a safer time to burn and make sure everybody puts their fire out completely. Fire out cold, soak it down with water and make sure there’s absolutely no smoke. And then a little more water,” Chad Hogue, Smith County Fire Marshal said.

Officials want to remind residents to be cautious of weather conditions before trying to burn.

“Generally, in the afternoon is when it’s most windy and most dangerous. Due to the dryness of the fuel, that’s probably the reasoning behind the control burns getting out,” Sean Dungan, Texas A&M Forest Service, said.
