The Los Angeles Rams season has already been defined more by the players who aren’t on the field than the ones playing in the games. And at the end of their near-4th-quarter comeback against the Green Bay Packers, it looked like one more player was going to be spending time away from the field.

With one minute and thirty-three seconds left in the game rookie sixth-rounder, Jordan Whittington caught his seventh and final pass. The hotly-contested catch moved the ball to the Packers’ 43-yard line. Whittington left the game and did not return for the three remaining plays. Later he was seen with athletic training staff on the sidelines.

After the game, he was spotted with his arm in a sling , leading people to expect the worst. Sean McVay clarified Whttington’s injury status, saying he hurt his shoulder, but it wasn’t severe enough to impact his availability.

After being a special teamer through the first three contests, Whittington got a chance to start versus the Chicago Bears. In that game, he caught six passes on eight targets for 62 yards. He was the Rams’ top receiver on Sunday against the Packers, catching seven passes for 89 yards.

The Rams drafted Whittington 213th overall in the 2024 draft from the Texas Longhorns. He flashed in training camp and stood out even more in the preseason. His 11 catches topped all rookie receivers and his 126 yards were third most.

With Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua out for the last several games, the Rams were desperate for a receiver to rise to the opportunity. Whittington appears to be the one they will lean on in their stead

Ahead of the season, head coach Sean McVay said Whittington was “going to be a factor.”
