LAKE MILLS — Kettle Moraine Lutheran defeated host Lakeside Lutheran 3-1 in nonconference boys soccer on Saturday.

The Chargers (6-7-1) took advantage of a Warriors own goal on a header in the 33rd minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

KML’s Zach Kneser scored on Jacob Schwalenberg’s assist in the 41st minute.

Lakeside (7-6-1) cut its deficit to 2-1 on Josef Rupnow’s goal in the 53rd minute assisted by Easton Wolfram.

Schwalenberg tacked on an insurance score in the 60th minute.

“It was another beautiful day for soccer,” Lakeside Lutheran boys soccer coach Eric Dorn said. “We played a skilled and well-coached KML team. Their numbers that they sent into the attack caused us to adjust by making one more of our mids be a little more defensive minded.

“The own goal was unfortunate and some mental lapses defensively, but we also missed too many opportunities in this game to score. This team is facing a lot of adversity when we’ve played against higher level teams. I hope the guys grow from it and come back better rather than letting these tough games get in our heads.”

    THURSDAY’S RESULT

MCFARLAND — Ty Sampson scored a hat trick and Kieson Bell added two goals to lead Division 3 third-ranked McFarland past visiting Lakeside Lutheran 6-1 in nonconference boys soccer on Thursday, Oct. 3.

Reilly Jobke scored unassisted in the fifth minute for Lakeside (7-5-1).

Sampson equalized in the 15th minute and added another score in the 19th minute. Bell (67th and 73rd minutes) and Sampson (69th minute) added second-half insurance goals for the Spartans (10-1-1).

“We had seen film on McFarland and knew they were going to be a solid team from top to bottom,” Lakeside boys soccer coach Eric Dorn said. “We wanted to come out with energy. It was great getting on the board first.

“Unfortunately we let in two kick goals a little later. They were good goals by them, but we can always eliminate those opportunities. The game balanced out a bit after that. Joah Robinson made some amazing saves to keep the game close.

“We just weren’t able to generate quality shots again. We have a good enough team to get into the attack. We are just missing the final piece. The final 15 minutes is where we kind of imploded. So it’s a bummer that the final score doesn’t seem to be a true testament for how the whole game went.

“Regardless, a game is 80 minutes, and you have to play all 80. We will have to watch the film to see what went wrong, what we can do better next time, and what we did well in this game to grow on. We only truly fail if we don’t learn anything from a loss.”
