LAKE MILLS — Fort Atkinson senior Mary Worden and junior Grant Heagney both earned top-five finishes in the Division 1 races at Friday’s Nightfall Classic held at the Lake Mills Golf Club.

Worden placed fourth in the girls race with a time of 19 minutes, 45 seconds in the 167-runner field for the Blackhawks, who posted a 95 team score to finish third and after losing a sixth runner tiebreaker for second place with Oshkosh West.

“The thing that stands out with Mary is consistency,” Fort Atkinson cross country coach Spencer Agnew said. “Week in and week out she is there leading the team, something she’s been doing for four years now. She’s someone we can always count on to be a low stick for us.”

Freshman Addi Miller (10th, 20:11), junior Ava Leurquin (16th, 20:32) and sophomores Mia Bilau (31st, 21:36) and Layla Kohl (48th, 22:37) also scored.

“We had a phenomenal performance on the girls side,” Agnew said. “Ava had a huge PR, as did Addi. Mia came in clutch since we were missing Analisa Boshart, who was at the homecoming football game as a member of the marching game. Across the board, we had a lot of girls knock off 30 to 60 seconds from their times.”

Heagney finished fifth in the 250-competitor boys D1 race in a time of 16:28.

“All season, Grant has shown steady improvement,” Agnew said. “He was aggressive during this race. He got out the fastest he’s ever gone out and really stuck his nose in there. That was kind of the name of the game for all the boys who raced. We’ve been holding things back early in races so far this season, but in this one the boys let it rip right from the gun.”

Sophomore Jameson Stafford (13th, 16:47), senior Owen Geiger (17th, 17:00), sophomore Vinny Sitkiewitz (31st, 17:32) and sophomore Graeson Geiger (66th, 18:33) also scored for the Blackhawks, who took fourth with a 123 score.

“Our depth on the boys side is really steadily improving,” Agnew said. “We have a lot of young guys in the top eight and some guys who haven’t been in many varsity meets. Those guys have stepped up and bought in. We are seeing a lot of good progression and a lot of positive vibes across the board.”

Fort hosts the annual Westby-Reed Invitational at FAHS on Thursday, with the girls race slated for 4:15 p.m. and the boys race at 4:55 p.m.

Division 1 girls team scores: Waunakee 27, Oshkosh West 95, Fort Atkinson 95, Sun Prairie East 118, Oak Creek 140, Baraboo 141, Lakes Community 152, DeForest 211, Milwaukee King 252, Milwaukee Ronald Reagan 265.

Division 1 boys team scores: Lakes Community 45, Sun Prairie East 75, DeForest 84, Fort Atkinson 123, Baraboo 134, Waunakee 180, Oak Creek 191, Milwaukee Ronald Reagan 200, Oshkosh West 217, Madison Memorial 223, Milwaukee King 258.
