    Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney, passes away at 91, claims report

    Cissy Houston passed away Monday morning in her New Jersey home. She was 91 years old. Houston had been under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease, according to her daughter-in-law, Pat Houston, who penned the following statement: (via The Associated Press )

    “Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We loss the matriarch of our family, “Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts.”

    Pat Houston called Cissy Houston’s contributions to popular music and culture “unparalleled.”

    Bobby Brown, who was married to Whitney Houston between 1992 and 2007, expressed condolences to the Houston family after Cissy Houston’s death. “Sending love and blessings to the Houston family on this great loss, may she rest in Peace and Power. The Browns,” wrote Brown. (via People Magazine )

    Cissy Houston’s death happened 12 years after that of her late daughter, Whitney, who passed away in 2012 after suffering from drug problems that ruined her voice and reputation. It also happened nine years after the death of her granddaughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, in 2015.

    Houston began her music career at an early age as a church performer before foraying into popular music in the 1960s as a member of The Sweet Inspirations, a backing group. Houston and The Sweet Inspirations served as backup for various soul singers, including Otis Redding and Dionne Warwick.

    Throughout her music career, Cissy Houston recorded over 600 songs in multiple genres. She also lent her vocal talents to music by other artists, such as Jimi Hendrix and Beyonce .
