Visitors to the Library of Michigan can now explore Detroit’s industrial past through a unique collection of rarely seen photos captured during the mid-20th century.

LANSING, MIA new exhibit at the Library of Michigan is offering the public an extraordinary look into Detroit's history. Titled “The Searching Eye: Images of Mid-Century Detroit,” the exhibit features a series of black-and-white photographs that capture everyday life in Detroit during the 1940s to the 1960s. The collection, opening to the public on October 12, showcases the work of Norman Zadoorian, a respected industrial photographer whose lens focused on both the iconic and lesser-known aspects of Detroit’s mid-century landscape.

Zadoorian, whose career spanned more than two decades, photographed everything from nuclear power plants and supermarkets to strikes, local political figures, and the city's labor force. The photos are an intimate portrayal of the city’s evolution from an industrial powerhouse to a bustling urban center, as well as its struggles during a time of rapid economic and social changes.

A Glimpse into Detroit’s Storied Industrial Era

The exhibit, divided into four main themes—Night and the City, Detroit as Muse, City of Work, and A Life Behind the Camera—provides visitors with a full spectrum of Detroit life. The images offer a raw yet artistic reflection of the mid-century Detroit that many remember but few have documented so thoroughly. The collection also includes essays and commentary from Zadoorian's son, Michael Zadoorian, a renowned Michigan author, giving the exhibit a deeply personal, intergenerational connection.

The exhibit stands out for the collaboration between father and son. According to State Librarian Randy Riley, “Norman’s lens and Michael’s composition work together in articulating a unique era in the city of Detroit.” This family connection adds a layer of emotion to the exhibit, as Michael's words breathe new life into his father's images, creating an experience that is both visual and literary.

Contextualizing Detroit’s Mid-Century Struggles and Triumphs

The exhibit arrives at a time when Detroit’s industrial past is being revisited and reassessed in cultural discussions. State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice emphasized the importance of these images in understanding Michigan's largest city: “Through this exhibit, library visitors will be able to picture what it was like to be in Michigan’s biggest city during the mid-1900s.”

Beyond the gritty realism of Detroit’s working class, the exhibit also highlights the city’s artistic and cultural scene during a time of significant transformation. Zadoorian’s work stands as both an archive and a tribute to the people who powered Detroit during its most turbulent decades.
