When Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. takes his first snap against the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, he will officially make history.

Despite these two teams meeting for what will be the 120th game in the series, Hawkins will be the first true freshman quarterback to ever start for the Sooners in the Red River Rivalry.

That's right. Even with Oklahoma's rich history of elite quarterbacks, none of them have ever started the game as a true freshman.

Of course, some of them played in this game. None as memorable as the last time it happened when Caleb Williams sparked a comeback for the ages and led the Sooners to storm back to an incredible 55-48 win.

Hawkins took over for Jackson Arnold in the Sooners' game against Tennessee and solidified his hold on the starting job after a comeback win over the Auburn Tigers. Hawkins boasted the Sooners' two most explosive plays of the season in that game and didn't commit any turnovers, something that plagued Oklahoma's offense to start the year.

Now with two more weeks of prep as the starter and a bye week to get more settled in, the hope is that Michael Hawkins Jr. continues to make strides and keep the Sooners' offense moving, a tall task going up against a talented (albeit untested) Texas defense.

However, Hawkins is cool under pressure and has a demeanor very similar to Kyler Murray in his calm, reasoned approach to the game. The staff has done nothing but praise his maturity since he early-enrolled with the team, no doubt a big reason why they turned to him to start over the more experienced Casey Thompson.

Just a little over nine months since Hawkins graduated high school, he will lead the Sooners out for their first-ever Red River Rivalry game in the SEC.

    No pressure right?
