    Union County library events for October

    Union County, Pa. — The Union County Library System, which includes the Public Library for Union County in Lewisburg, Herr Memorial Library in Mifflinburg, and West End Library in Laurelton, is hosting the following events in October.

    All programs are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Register to attend by calling 570-523-1172, visiting the library, or registering online. For additional information, visit the UCLS website .

    The Public Library for Union County

    Adult/Teen Programs

    • Mah Jongg Club

    Tuesdays: 1-3:30 p.m.

    Anyone interested in playing the American version of the ancient Chinese tile game are welcome to socialize and play.

    • Chess Club

    Thursdays: 5-7 p.m.

    Stop into the library on Thursdays to join the Chess Club! It's a fantastic chance to learn, grow, and have fun with fellow patrons who love chess. Bring your own board and meet us in the teen area. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned player, there's something here for everyone. See you there!

    • English as a Second Language

    Monday, Oct. 7, 21, and 28: 12:30-2 p.m.

    Jeanne Crago, ESL Instructor from the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, will help students of any language background with conversation, pronunciation, reading, and writing skills in English. Students of all levels are welcome.

    • Grief Support Group

    Thursday, Oct. 10: 6-7 p.m.

    For anyone who has ever experienced a significant loss of a loved one or friend please join Donna Miller, Bereavement Coordinator, as she helps guide you through the healing process.

    • Kiwanis Builders Club

    Thursdays: 4-5 p.m.

    Builders Club is a student-led service club for students in middle school. The purpose of Builders Club is to develop leadership through service to the school and community. This is a teens and tweens event.

    • New and Expecting Parent Group

    First Saturday of each month: 10-11:30 a.m.

    Join us the first Saturday of each month for an informal meet up led by Doula Tasha Hall. Connect with fellow new parents and parents-to-be and discuss the joys and challenges of new parenthood.

    • Conversational Italian

    Thursday, Oct. 3, 10, 17, and 24: 6-7 p.m.

    Join Linda Kander and enjoy practicing Italian through guided/free conversation, and opportunities to expand vocabulary and basic language structures. Participants can jump in as beginners or as experienced speakers. We will adapt to all levels.

    • Conversational Spanish

    Thursday, Oct. 3, 10, 17, and 24: 7-8 p.m.

    • Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Susquehanna Valley Lewisburg

    Monday, Oct. 21, 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

    Join members of the Quilting Guild for a day of quilting, sewing, and needle work. Bring your own materials. Those looking to attend all day are permitted to bring a bagged lunch and are responsible for the clean-up.

    • Master Gardeners — Composting 101

    Monday, Oct. 21: 6:30-8 p.m.

    Join Master Gardener Lori Bartholomew as she discusses how to make a simple and successful compost using everyday household items.

    • Sourdough MakingThursday, Oct. 3, 17, and 24: 6-8 p.m.Come join us for a three-session, hands-on course to learn how to bake your own sourdough bread at home. You’ll discover that artisan sourdough bread is relatively easy to make at home, has a marvelous flavor, is great for your digestion and health, doesn’t require fancy equipment, and is much less expensive than bread purchased in a grocery store or bakery.     • Baby Storytime

    Friday, Oct. 11 and 25: 11-11:30 a.m.

    A storytime based on the “Mother Goose on the Loose” program, which shows that children learn best through routine and repetition in a nurturing environment. Learn songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and simple ASL signs. For ages 0-2.

    • Lego Night

    Monday, Oct. 14: 6-7 p.m.

    Leave your blocks at home, bring your imagination, and build with Legos. For all ages.

    • Preschool Storytime

    Tuesday, Oct. 1, 15, 22, 29: 10-11 a.m.

    Join Miss Alicia to sing songs, read books, and learn some simple ASL signs centered around a different theme each week. For ages 3-5.

    • Halloween STEM

    Tuesday, Oct. 29: 5:30-7:30 p.m.

    Get ready for a spooktacular STEM adventure this Halloween!     Teens choose a craft to make while enjoying some fall treats. This is a teens and tweens program for those in grades 6-12.

Connect with other parents and caregivers.• Preschool Discover StorytimeWednesdays: 10:30-11:30 a.m.Join a weekly storytime with Ms. Sheila for children 2-5 years of age and their parents/caregivers. Crafts, games, and hands-on activities are provided to reinforce the theme and engage the children in creative play and learning.

    West End Library

    Adult /Teen Programs

    • Mah Jongg

    Fridays: 1-3 p.m.

    Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. No experience is needed. An instructor is on hand to teach newcomers this tile-based game.

    • West End Readers

    Thursday, Oct. 10: 6-7 p.m.

    Connect with fellow book lovers as they discuss "The Forty Elephants" by Erin Bledsoe. Each month our group will select and discuss a new book.

    • Cooking with Friends

    Thursday, Oct. 24: 6-7 p.m.

    Join us for a festive evening of culinary fun as we celebrate the Halloween season! Gather with friends to prepare and enjoy spooky-themed dishes that are sure to delight. Don't miss this chance to cook, eat, and embrace the Halloween spirit together.

    • Basic Crochet Class

    Saturday, Oct. 12: 10 a.m. to noon

    Stop by the West End Library and learn to crochet! Bring your own size 7, 8, or 9 crochet hook. We have a good supply of yarn available at the library. If you want to bring your own yarn, please make sure it is 4-ply knitting worsted in a solid color.• Just Before Daylight: The Gabel Murder of 1935Thursday, Oct. 24: 6-7 p.m.Farmer Charles Gabel was found dead in his barn on a frigid winter morning. He'd been killed in cold blood, just before daylight. It was as if two worlds had collided. In the depths of the Great Depression, the Susquehanna Valley harbored both shining lights and desperate souls. Dr. Ed Slavishak will unravel this story to show the tangled web of youth, family, and crime that captured the community ninety years ago.Cyber Scares and Security NightmaresTuesday, Oct. 29 – 4-5 p.m.October is Cyber Security Awareness Month!
