A plan to remove vehicles from Market Square is no longer in the works.

Downtown stakeholders have abandoned the plan after fierce opposition from merchants and others who feared that it would have a devastating impact on business.

The Post-Gazette reports Jeremy Waldrup, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, said the initial reports about traffic being eliminated were based on a “conceptual drawing” of “what the future of Market Square could be,” not any formal plan.

He stated that vehicles would not be banned, noting that access is needed for everything, including deliveries to food pickups at popular spots like the Original Oyster House.

First tear down the bike lanes that nobody uses (always empty, every day when I drive in) near the T at market square. This causes traffic backup with one lane closed and reserved for pigeon poop. Plus, some of these bikers don’t use bike lane but use car lane instead and are a pain in arse
