MARINETTE — A Town of Stephenson man shot his wife in front of her father and, following a brief stand-off, turned the gun on himself Sunday in the Van Beek subdivision west of Crivitz.

Troy D. Noble, 49, shot his wife, Erica J. Noble, 46, with a handgun late Sunday afternoon. Marinette County Dispatch received a call at 5:13 p.m. of a man shooting his wife several times at an address on South 5th Street, according to Sheriff Randy Miller.

Erica Noble’s father was dropping something off when she got into his vehicle, Miller said.

“She actually got into the vehicle and that’s where this took place — as she was attempting to leave,” he said.

The victim’s father took her to another location and that’s where she died, the sheriff said. The father was not shot.

Troy Noble went back into the home where he remained between an hour to 90 minutes when a single gunshot was heard, Miller said.

Officers, in addition to members of the Marinette County Special Response Team, Crisis Negotiations, and Drone Team, immediately responded to the incident location and established a perimeter around the residence. Miller said it’s a fairly remote area with a lot of seasonal homes so no evacuation of neighbors was necessary. No one else was in the house.

“At one point one shot was fired which they later were able to confirm he was deceased from that self-inflicted shot,” Miller said.

No shots were fired by law enforcement and the suspect did not shoot at law enforcement, he added.

Neither the husband nor his wife show up on Wisconsin court records and Miller said his department has no history of being called to the residence.

“However, it was indicated that there were (domestic violence) issues there, but nothing that came to light to us,” he said. “We were not aware of it.”

The couple were married in 2021, according to a social media post. Troy Noble was retired from the Army, a social media post states.

In an EagleHerald story published Monday, Courtney Olson, the executive director for Rainbow House Domestic Abuse Service, stated that the Marinette-based non-profit is losing a $120,000 federal grant, along with $4,000 in county funding. She also said Wisconsin ranks eighth in the nation in the number of women killed by men.

“That’s going to affect us,” Miller said. “Losing funding for a program like that — that’s a critical need in our community.”

He spoke about the issue as it relates to the county.

“We view domestic violence as a serious problem,” Miller said. “That’s one of the reasons the state has taken a stance on mandatory arrests. If and when, we get into a situation where we can determine somebody was the primary aggressor, an arrest is made. ... I’m in complete support of these programs. To give victims resources and the ability to move forward after instances of domestic violence. For us it’s a serious situation when we have this and unfortunately, in this one, we weren’t aware of anything going on there.”

He said it’s not uncommon when incidents aren’t reported. “Sometimes they just don’t want to get the police involved,” Miller said.

The case remains under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office, and the Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office. Also assisting at the scene were Wisconsin State Patrol, Marinette Police Department, Bay Area Rescue, and Twin Bridge Rescue.
