The New York Jets shocked the NFL world on Tuesday with the firing of head coach Robert Saleh , following a disappointing 2-3 start to the 2024 season. Despite high expectations with Aaron Rodgers returning healthy this season after recovering from his Achilles injury, the Jets' struggles—especially on offense—ultimately led to Robert Saleh’s departure.

Saleh, who was hired in 2021, had a tough tenure with the Jets, amassing a 20-36 record. Injuries to key players, inconsistent quarterback play, and an underperforming offense were contributing factors to his dismissal.

The Jets had hoped that pairing Saleh’s defensive expertise with Rodgers' leadership would finally result in a winning season, but back-to-back losses and scoring just 26 points in the past two games sealed his fate.

Jets owner Woody Johnson wasted no time appointing an interim head coach, selecting Jeff Ulbrich, the team’s defensive coordinator since 2021, to take over for the remainder of the season.

Ulbrich brings an impressive track record to the position, having served as the Atlanta Falcons' defensive coordinator in 2020 before joining the Jets.

Under his leadership, the Jets' defense has consistently ranked among the top in the NFL, currently sitting at No. 2 in yards allowed this season. He now faces the challenge of guiding the team through a turbulent season while maintaining the defense’s dominance.

“Jeff Ulbrich will serve as our interim head coach for the remainder of the season," said Woody Johnson in a press release. "He is a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team. I believe he, along with the coaches on this staff, can get the most out of our talented team and attain the goals we established this offseason."

Ulbrich’s first major test as head coach comes in a crucial Monday night matchup against the Buffalo Bills, where he’ll look to stabilize the Jets and guide them back to a winning path.
