New York Jets owner Woody Johnson's damning reason for firing Robert Saleh

Robert Saleh has been fired from his head coaching role at the New York Jets after franchise owner Woody Johnson lost faith in his ability to turn the season around .

It was announced Tuesday morning that the Jets had parted ways with Saleh , with defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich acting as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The Jets are 2-3 after an inconsistent start to the season, despite the organization being in win-now mode with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.

In Johnson's 25-year tenure as owner, he has never fired a head coach during the middle of a season. But there was an overwhelming opinion high up that Saleh would not be able to turn things around so immediate action had to be taken, according to SNY.

The report also states that players and fellow coaches were stunned. Saleh turned up at the Jets facility on Tuesday to begin preparing for Monday's primetime game against the Buffalo Bills . He was told at the facility that he would no longer serve as head coach.

All Jets players and coaches reported to the facility on Monday to prepare for the Week 6 clash against the Bills. With a win over their divisional rivals, the Jets could move to first in the AFC East, but preparations have now been impacted.

Saleh himself has admitted that results could have been better, but it was his offensive coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett, who appeared at risk and not the head coach. The decision was made, and Johnson then released a statement to confirm the terminated relationship.

"This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as the Head Coach of the Jets," Johnson wrote in a statement. "I thanked him for his hard work these past three-and-a-half years and wished him and his family well moving forward.

"This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction. Jeff Ulbrich will serve as our Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season.

"He is a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team. I believe he along with the coaches on this staff can get the most out of our talented team and attain the goals we established this offseason."

The Jets lost the opening game of the season to the San Francisco 49ers but turned things around with wins over the Tennessee Titans and the New England Patriots. A disappointing 10-9 defeat to the Denver Broncos was then followed by a 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London.

There have been moments of tension between Saleh and Rodgers this season, although the veteran quarterback insisted that they're friends and have a "great relationship" last week. Now, the fate of Rodgers and the Jets this season is in the hands of Ulbrich.
