R.I.P. Ed Wheeler: ‘Law & Order’ And ‘Broadcast News’ Actor Dead At 88

Actor Ed Wheeler died of respiratory failure resulting from pneumonia complications on Aug. 21, Deadline reports. He was 88.

The late actor’s wife, Messeret Stroman Wheeler, confirmed the news to the outlet, revealing that he passed away at Englewood Hospital in New Jersey.

“His life was a testament to perseverance, creativity and the power of generosity and kindness,” she said. “Ed will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”

Per The New York Post , Messeret also shared the news on Instagram on Monday (Oct. 7), praising her husband, in part, as “a guiding light, a supportive partner and [her] heart.”

“We built a life and created art together, and your legacy will continue to inspire,” she shared. “I will forever miss your voice, your wisdom and your generosity. To all who knew Ed, thank you for your love and support during this time. Let’s remember him for the joy he brought into our lives and the profound impact he had on the world. Rest in peace, My Honey. You will always be in my heart.”

Among Wheeler’s TV credits are New York Undercover , Cosby , Third Watch , Ed , Little Bill , Whoopi , Law & Order , Hope & Faith , One Life to Live and Blue Bloods .

He also appeared in films like Broadcast News (1987), Presumed Innocent (1990), Drop Squad (1994), Thinner (1996), Daylight (1996), Godzilla (1998), Mickey Blue Eyes (1999), Head of State (2003), Uncertainty (2008) and The Good Heart (2009).

Wheeler’s work transcended the screen, as he appeared in theatrical productions as a member of the Negro Ensemble Company, per Deadline. In addition to receiving the Living Legend Award National Black Theatre Festival, he and Messeret joined forces on a production company, co-executive producing a 2023 short film titled Keepers of the Flame .
