First Lady Dr. Jill Biden to visit Yuma for Harris-Walz campaign event

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Dr. Jill Biden is traveling to battleground states like Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania to attend a few Harris-Walz campaign events.

In a press release, the visits to the battleground states comes after early voting in Arizona starts on October 9 and mail ballots going out in the five states.

During those visits, Dr. Biden will "highlight Vice President Harris' vision for a new way forward that protects reproductive freedom, strengthens our democracy, and ensures every person has the opportunity to not just get by, but to get ahead," according to the press release.

Dr. Biden, according to the the press release, is stopping in Yuma on Friday, October 11.

Some locals are glad Doctor Biden is coming, while others are a little hesitant.

Yuma local Bob Mead is glad the first lady will be in Yuma, but questions the timing.

"It just seems a little suspect to me that you know 31 days before the election now that we're getting all this attention. This should've happened three and a half years ago, but I don't have a problem with it. I'm glad that she's coming down here," said Mead.

She will arrive at Yuma International Airport and then attend a political event. Both will be open to the media.

Local Yuma County Democratic Party Chair Xanthe Bullard says this is an opportunity to show cities like Yuma that they matter in the eyes of Vice President Harris, Gov. Walz and the Bidens.

"It's not just big cities that are going to make a difference here and they’re also not the only ones that are being considered when policies are being developed," said Bullard.

New City Council elect Karen Watts shares why, in her opinion, the people of Yuma should tune in to what the First Lady has to say.

"I think she'll bring a lot of positivity to the area, and it is important that we vote. So, anytime someone of that stature comes and encourages that vote, I think that's important," said Watts.

After visiting Yuma, the First Lady will travel to Phoenix for an event on Saturday.
