Desmond Howard Gets Brutally Honest on Ashton Jeanty's Heisman Chances

There have been a lot of breakout college football stars this year, but none are bigger than Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty.

Through just five games, Jeanty has put up some truly astonishing numbers for Boise State (95 CAR, 1031 YDS, 16 TD), and he appears to be one of the leading candidates for the Heisman Trophy.

There are some potential roadblocks for Jeanty, as he doesn't play at a huge school, and he plays at an undervalued position in running back. If there's one guy who knows what it would take for Jeanty to walk away with the Trophy, though, it's Desmond Howard, and he dished on the superstar running back's chances of winning the award.

"He's gonna have to be consistent. Now, his name is on the map. He's a guy who, five games into the season, no one was really talking about Ashton Jeanty. But because of his performance, we're starting to give him national attention, national recognition. A lot of voters are going to start to watch. 'OK, this kid from Boise State, number two, let's check him out week in and week out and see if he continues to put up these numbers.'"

"I don't think they're going to have any big, marquee national games, but if they're in the dog fight and he's the difference maker in the game, despite who the opponent is, that's gonna elevate his status as a Heisman Trophy candidate too." - Desmond Howard, College Football Live

Simply put, if Jeanty continues to produce at his current rate, it's going to be tough to deny him the Heisman Trophy. He's averaging over 10 yards per carry, and he is fresh off a 13-carry, 186 yard, three touchdown performance where he didn't even play in the second half of the game.

Jeanty certainly isn't playing for the biggest school in the nation, but if he can continue to put up these massive numbers, Howard believes voters will reward him for his efforts in the Heisman Trophy race.

Really Good player will have a good year against against average competition, if in a power 5 Conference would get a real good look, but Mt West he'll probably get an "Atta Boy"👍
