Support is building for the family of a young father and wrestling standout from Long Island who was killed in a shooting.

Lee Mauras, age 22, originally from Hempstead, was shot at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, in a parking lot in downtown Portland, Oregon, police told local station KATU . He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities did not speculate on a possible motive for the shooting. No suspects had been arrested as of Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Mauras had recently moved to the Portland area to attend Clackamas Community College, where he had committed to wrestling in the upcoming season, the school said on Instagram .

It would’ve marked the continuation of an already impressive wrestling career that included being a four-time Nassau County medalist, in 2019 for Freeport High School and in 2020 for Hempstead High School.

Mauras notched state finishes of 4th, 6th, and 2nd from 2018 to 2020, according to New York USA Wrestling. He also represented Puerto Rico at the Senior Greco-Roman Pan-American Championships in February, finishing 10th in his weight class.

Writing on a GoFundMe, relatives said the loss of Mauras, who leaves behind a toddler-aged son, has left them shattered and searching for justice.

“Lee was a devoted father, passionate about wrestling, and someone who lit up every room he entered,” said campaign organizer Angela Ragione.

Money raised will help Mauras’ family “fight for justice,” covering travel and lodging expenses as they go back and forth between Long Island and Oregon, Ragione said.

“His family deserves to be there to honor him and demand accountability for his senseless death, but they are facing immense financial strain as they prepare for the legal battle ahead,” she added.

The campaign had raised over $2,000 as of Tuesday, Oct. 8. Those who wish to donate can do so here .
