New York Mets Use Timely Hitting To Take 2-1 NLDS Lead

The New York Mets won 7-2 to take a 2-1 lead in the NLDS. Mets First Baseman Pete Alonso got the scoring started in this game with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. Designated Hitter Jesse Winker hit another solo home run to give the New York Mets a 2-0 lead through four innings. Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea worked out of trouble in the top of the sixth inning to preserve the lead. He escaped runners on first and second with no outs unscathed by punching out First Baseman Bryce Harper and inducing a double play from Right Fielder Nick Castellanos to end the threat.

The New York Mets took advantage of escaping the sixth inning and tacked on two runs on a single by Right Fielder Starling Marte to make it 4-0. New York's offense was not finished this evening as Shortstop Jose Iglesias hit a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh and Shortstop Francisco Lindor had an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. Will New York be able to win Game 4 and advance to their first NLCS since 2015?

New York Mets Play a Complete Game

The Phillies offense had no answer for Manaea in this game. He was masterful as he tossed seven scoreless innings and surrendered three hits while punching out six. He only surrendered three hits to help New York take a lead in this series. New York Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza let Manaea come out for the top of the eighth but pulled him after allowing a single to Shortstop Edmundo Sosa. New York's bullpen, as has been the case throughout the MLB Playoffs, was not very good.

Relief Pitcher Phil Maton allowed Manaea's runner to score on an RBI single by Harper and allowed an RBI single to Castellanos. New York's late-game insurance runs came in handy this evening. Philadelphia Starting Pitcher Aaron Nola had an inconsistent game in the loss. He tossed five innings and surrendered four earned runs. He was unable to limit the long ball and escape trouble in the sixth inning. The team's bullpen also struggled as they surrendered three earned runs over three innings.

    Looking Ahead To Game 4

The New York Mets will send Starting Pitcher Jose Quintana (10-10, 3.75 ERA) to the bump as they look to advance to the NLCS tomorrow evening. He will be opposed by Ranger Suarez (12-8, 3.46 ERA) in the contest. Suarez had a great start to the regular season but faltered down the stretch. He faced the New York Mets three times this season and fared well. Suarez surrendered four earned runs over 15.2 innings of work. The Philadelphia Phillies will need Suarez to regain his form from earlier this season for the team to extend their season.

Quintana had a stellar regular season and was spectacular in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. He tossed six scoreless innings and punched out five in the do-or-die game. Quintana faced Philadelphia three times in the regular season and experienced some success. He surrendered five earned runs in 16 innings. If both of these starting pitchers perform to their potential, tomorrow's game can be a low-scoring affair. The Philadelphia Phillies will leave nothing to chance as they face a must-win game on Wednesday.
