There was a surprise guest when Al B. Sure! picked up an award at the American Liver Foundation’s National Legacy Gala in New York on Monday night — Homeland Security.
After thanking friends and associates like his wealth manager, medical team and lawyers, Sure unexpectedly shouted out the agency that recently took Diddy into custody .
He prefaced the acknowledgement by explaining, “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say this because I don’t want it to go viral.”
But the singer went ahead to tell the crowd, we hear, “We even have Homeland Security in the building. Detective Jackson, good to see you.”
It’s unclear who Jackson is in the organization, and a rep for the singer did not get back to us.
While Sure! says he appreciates all of the coverage, he now wants to go viral for his work spreading awareness about organ transplants, and health equity for people from marginalized communities, he said.
Sure was hospitalized for nearly two months in 2022, the year that he received a successful liver transplant.
He is now the executive chairman of the Health Equity in Transplantation Coalition, an organization co-founded by his “co-pilot” Rachel Noerdlinger, whom he thanked for believing in him.
After receiving the transplant, he says he’s fully converted from singing and writing love song anthems, to civil rights and healthcare advocacy.
“I decided to make a decision to get up and fight to advocate for all transplant patients around the world,” he said.
He’s moved on from singing fame, because, “Health, to me, is the new wealth,” he said.
In another nod to Diddy, he added, “Some people are superficial out there [and] think it’s all about the money. What is it? ‘All About the Benjamins?'” he asked referencing the disgraced mogul’s 1998 smash of the same name.
Sure! choked up mentioning his mother, who is battling cancer and watched the gala virtually.
“I love you mom. You’re my hero,” he said.
The “Off on Your Own” singer also shared he’s publishing a memoir, “Before Coma and After Coma.”
Quintin Gazsi, Dr. Scott Friedman, and brothers Joseph, Michael and Tom McMahon of the Lee & Aifan McMahon Foundation were also honored.
