The bears at Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska have had a feast this year, devouring an abundance of salmon at Brooks Falls. But the question on everyone’s mind was, who would be crowned the 2024 Fat Bear Week champion?

From October 2 to October 8, bear enthusiasts across the globe cast their votes in the annual competition. The showdown came down to two giants: Chunk, also known as Bear 32, and Grazer, Bear 128. After over 71,000 votes, Grazer emerged victorious, taking the coveted title for the second year in a row. Her victory came despite the fierce competition from Chunk, who garnered over 30,000 votes.

This win is particularly poignant as Grazer, a protective mother bear raising her third litter, faced personal tragedy earlier in the summer when her cub slipped over the waterfall at Brooks Falls and was killed by Chunk, her competitor. Grazer fought to protect her cub, but the altercation ultimately ended in loss. However, the determined mama bear went on to claim her second consecutive title, solidifying her status as the reigning queen of Katmai.

Chunk, the largest bear on the river this year, is known for his distinctive dark brown fur, narrow-set eyes, and a scar across his muzzle. A mighty contender, Chunk devoured an impressive 42 salmon in just 10 hours at Brooks Falls, showcasing his prowess.
