It’s OK if the Greenfield School varsity boys soccer team finishes fourth in the 2-A/3-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference because the Knights are ranked No. 4 among NCISAA 2-A teams with the state playoffs looming.

Greenfield suffered its second 3-1 loss this season to CPIC-leading and unbeaten Cape Fear Academy on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Forbes Field. That loss dropped the Knights to 11-7-1 overall and 5-5 as the top 2-A team in the CPIC. Greenfield wraps up its regular season at home Thursday against archrival Wayne Country Day.

The Knights will finish behind three 3-A teams — Cape Fear Academy, John Paul II Catholic and Coastal Christian — in the CPIC but split with John Paul and were only outscored 15-7 in those six matches.

The Hurricanes, now 15-3-1 overall and 10-0 in conference matches, had to rally with three second-half goals to top Greenfield 3-1 on Sept. 26 in Wilmington. Cape Fear avoided that pitfall Tuesday with two goals in the first half before adding an insurance goal in the second half.

Junior Cooke Rhodes scored the only goal for the Knights off an assist from classmate Landyn Coolbaugh in the first half.

Harry Osborne had a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes, ranked No. 3 among NCISAA 3-A programs. Jace Williams and Curren Gaskill each scored for CFA while Ethan Gatt and Council Lancaster added assists.

Knights senior goalkeeper Kel Winstead turned in another dazzling performance with 16 saves to help keep the score close.
